Herbologeist was the store that Anye had to find. The name had an eastern Bormen sound to it, but it might be just an over-creative merchant who liked to mix words from different languages. She had wandered back and forth on the Golden Coast Street, but the sign bearing the name Herbologeist was nowhere to be found. Did Djzackaby – or better known as Jacob in the lands of Iluskia – get the address wrong?
“Expect the unexpected,” he told her when she embarked to deliver the herbs this particular person – or merchant – ordered.
It was their first success of magic medical herbs. With her help, Djzackaby managed to grow some plants using magic. He just started his lesson with Violet, and she was tasked by Green with helping him out in his farm while he taught her many things about plants and their uses. And these herbs she is now carrying along with her? They are called “catalysts” which might accelerate healing – when applied directly to wounds – or chemical processes when mixed with compatible ingredients. These herbs were supposed to only grow in the northern parts of Helskye – a continent far away from Iluskia – but with their knowledge, Djzackab, Green and her managed to grow them in the cooler continent called Iluskia afterall.
Anye stopped. If trials only lead to error, it is time to think. “Expect the unexpected,” she repeated Djzackaby’s words. “Expect the unexpected.” What does she expect Herbologeist to look like? Shabby? Old? Yes, Djzackaby said the person ordering the herbs were just starting out, so she expected to have an old, shabby place which might be cheap to rent. And that is also why she has been walking around the rather shabby part of Golden Coast Street.
She sighed. Golden Coast Street has two sides: Golden Coast Street – West; and Golden Coast Street – East. She has been running around Golden Coast Street – West for hours now. Why didn’t she think of the east part? “Expect the unexpected!” She held back a scream. After calming herself down, she went to the other side of Golden Coast Street.
Herbologeist was beyond her expectations: The owner had apparently worked hard to make it look shiny and glimmering. You would rather expect yourself to be in a castle than in a potion store. Anye was impressed by how clean the place is being kept. Also how they organized their potions? And also how they neatly labeled and boxed each ingredient? Anye expected the owner to be a gentle person, maybe slightly older?
“Expect the unexpected,” Djzackab’s words came ringing back. She knocked on her forehead. People from the place she came from have a habit of doing that when they try to remember something important. “Expect the unexpected.”
The helper-mice did not seem to be tasked with customer service, so they ignored her entirely. Well, maybe not really ignoring, because they kept looking at the bell on the desk when they noticed her confused look. Maybe they were not allowed to speak? People with helper-mice really like to overwork them. But this owner seemed to be limiting their work-task instead?
After overcoming her own hesitation, Anye rang the bell. A sweet-sounding “coming” could be heard from the back. The voice sounded distant, so it may take a while. She decided to look around the store. Maybe she could bring back some roots for Djzackab to experiment with.
She was surprised by how suddenly a woman around her age – maybe a little younger? – stood by her side. “Are you Jack’s helper? The one supposed to bring the herbs?” Her big, bright eyes examined Anye’s. They were uncannily… Deep? Anye could not find a word on how to describe this person. Unexpected? That is how Djzackaby would describe her, right?
The woman held out her hand. “I’m Kim! Nice to meet you!”
Her enthusiasm caught Anye off-guard. Her charm made her forget her usual ritual, so she just slowly reached out and answered: “Anye. Gildanye.”
Kim looked around, as if trying to find something inside her head while muttering “Gildanye.” Then she gasped. “Are you from Northern Rorg?”
Anye nodded. It is impressive on how she could get it right on the first try. Most people in Iluskia would think that she came from the eastern part of Rorg, just because of her pitch-black hair. They ignore the fact that her hair shimmers red near fire. “And you?”
The slightly younger woman giggled and flicked her hair. “Please, I know how much you northern Rorgers interact with people from around the world. Don’t play dumb!”
The dark brown hair with moss-green shimmer. The emerald eyes with a touch of hazel. “Helskye?” and because the southern parts get more sun than any other… “South?”
Kim clapped her hands with a cheerful grin. “Bravo! – Okay let’s get down to business now.” She suddenly turned serious and led Anye to the counter of the shop. “Maxwell, please take care of the customers until I’m done with this one,” she said to one of the helper-mice while she made place for the herbs she ordered.
This woman is very intelligent in letting people know what to do, since Anye immediately understood that she was supposed to hand out the herbs and receipt without needing Kim to tell her. “We are very sorry for the delay. Djzack – I mean Jacob – and I tried our best to cultivate them as quickly as we could, but yea…”
She waved her hand while going through the herbs. “Well, I was not in a rush anyway. On the contrary, I’m impressed that you could manage it! Yes, and they are in a higher quality than if I were to import them from northern Helskye. This is awesome!” She exclaimed after examining every single leaf of the herbs. “You two certainly have talent! And Jack only started out with magic, right? If this goes on, I could just order my stuff from you and get fresher ingredients!” Kim rubbed her hands. “This means… I could make potions with a higher quality – and lower costs!! Awesome! Yellow would be baffled by my intelligence!” Her eyes sparked out all the excitement she seemed to be struggling containing to herself.
“Oh right, the money!” Kim turned to her serious self again and produced the money she had already prepared for the transaction.
After Anye signed all the papers Kim shoved in front of her, she asked the store-owner if she may look around the store. Kim was all excited and even took Anye around. Maxwell seemed to understand that his boss was still occupied with one person, so he took care of the customers who came at the moment.
The store seemed to have a good number of customers. Anye thought that it was mainly because of how well organized and decorated it was. And the helper-mice were well taken care of, not like you would usually see in most stores. They might be the most looked-down workers, but it still feels good if you see them clean and happy like in Herbologeist.
Kim was unexpected. She was unexpectedly kind, enthusiastic and hard-working. Anye got unexpectedly well with her. And who would expect that her cousin worked in the northern parts of Rorg?
And who would expect they decided to visit the bar where her mentor, Yellow, likes to hang out? Anye did not expect to be able to befriend someone as quickly as in some hours. It has been a long time since she met someone as kind and friendly as Kim. So, why not? Sombre is also a friend she has not said hello to for a long time.
